Name: Jayford Sarial
Title: Director
DOB: 31/01/1993
Gender: Male
Village & Island: Atangurua Village, North Pentecost
Educational Background
At the very base of the popular Mount Vatuvai on North Pentecost, overlooking the eastern sea of the island, and a unique place where you will feel the ever endless breeze from the ocean is a village called Atangurua. It is where the story of my life begins. Not only did I grow up there but it is also where I was trained to be a leader. I was raised by a committed father, very hardworking and one that values education more than anything. In the year 2000 I began my educational journey and for 10 years I attended Lini Primary and Junior Secondary School, located around two kilometres due north from home. In 2010 I was selected to Saint Patricks College to begin senior studies but was then transferred to Ranwadi Churches of Christ College. In 2012, I was awarded a scholarship by the British Friends of Vanuatu (BFOV) while doing my year 13 studies at Malapoa College. The scholarship was even extended to a year at the University of the South Pacific where I enrolled to a Bachelor of Science Program majoring in Physics and Geography. In 2015 I was awarded with a Scholarship to PNG for further studies but unfortunately it did not materialise. I am now taking some educational courses at the University of the South Pacific.
Work Experience
If anyone ever asks me what my interests are, then I’d say I love going on adventures and gaining new ideologies and experiences, this has been an important part of my life. In 2014, I did an attachment with the Vanuatu Department of Forestry under the Conservation Unit for a couple of months purposely to gain experiences. In 2015 I spent some months at the Department of Biosecurity where a gained some more experience. In 2016 I was fortunate enough to work with a Swiss Scientist on a research project on Efate Island. Another heap of experiences were acquired in the field of researching! In 2017 I was offered an opportunity to teach at Tebakor College. From then on, I became a full time Teacher, Tutoring Year 13 (Foundation) and Year 12 (Preliminary) Physics at Tebakor College whilst also carrying out the roles and responsibilities of the Director at Vanuatu’s Little Stars Summer School.
VLSSS Experience
During the summer of 2012, I was offered the opportunity to be a teacher at the very first set up of the program on South Pentecost. Little did I know that six years later I would be the figurehead of the organisation. It was not until when I discovered the goals and vision of the organisation that I realised I made a great choice to accept the offer of joining the program. VLSSS is such a unique strategy for fostering progress throughout our islands, and founded by a young Brit who is from the far end of the world but yet has such a big heart and concern for the people of Vanuatu. This is actually what continues to inspire and motivate me to remain actively involved in the program. I believe VLSSS is an inspiring program that will ignite positive development in our islands. Having the organisation’s motto ‘shaping leaders for a brighter tomorrow’ and one of its goals of extending to every island in Vanuatu, I am confident the country will greatly benefit from this program.
